Women on Target

For whatever reason, I have found myself getting just as involved in our Gun Club as Ken has.  Now, one or both of us is at the Club one to two times per week.  My goal, however was to bring more programs to women in my area other than the Women on Target that is only offered 3 - 4 times per year.

The Women on Target is an NRA sponsored event, and it's amazing!  Up to 50 women come to our Club for an entire Saturday, and they get to try everything: pistol, shotgun, rifle, bullseye pistol and archery.  Lunch is included and they get a safety briefing/law seminar.  The cost has been $25 for this entire day, and it's a great deal.  Unfortunately, there was nothing for the women once they completed this course, and most of the women obviously didn't feel comfortable with jumping in to the regular events that are dominated by men.

So, another woman at the Club, Michelle Winkhart, and I started talking about things, and we created the Women's Clinics.  I host at the Apple Valley Gun Club, and she hosts at the Lion's Club in Lucerne Valley.  I petitioned the AVGC Board to pitch the idea, and they said to do whatever was necessary.

Whew!  I have been so busy trying to get this off the ground, that I have barely had any time to think.  Our first event in May went really well!  It was a pistol night, and the only criticism I have of myself is that I should have had more Range Safety Officers on hand.  We had such an array of skills that night that it was too difficult for the 5 of us to keep everyone and everything handled.
Jon Marhoeffer and Rick Danzey had a great sense of humor when Michelle handed out the boas to make them honorary women for the evening.

Demonstrating the Steel Challenge for the ladies

I was even challenged to try the Steel Challenge in mini form.

Now, I'm getting ready to host a CCW Information Night.  Most of the men are unhappy that this is a Women's Only deal, but I'm the one who called the County to see if they would come out and talk about the application process, etc. for obtaining a carry concealed permit in our County.  The deputies said they would do it when I asked, so we have a program going.  The following night will be our Shotgun event.  I'm really tired, but the women are so happy to have this going and the response has been huge.

Women's Rifle Shoot at the Lion's Club
It's amazing what I found to make me feel like I'm helping out.  Teaching is still rewarding, but the politics of it having gotten to me.  This is a ton of fun, and I'm loving every second of this.
