Ken and I subscribed to the local paper. It is called the Big Horn County News. We were told that we would learn most of what would be in the paper on the streets beforehand (did I mention this is a really small town), but we wanted to show our support to the local businesses, and $39 per year isn't bad - it's a weekly paper mailed to your house. So, I was seriously surprised to see an insert all about the local school district. More surprise came when I saw my own name in print.
Once I got over the shock, I went through the insert and realized that I had to keep a copy. It has the contact information and name of everyone who works in the District; from the Admin to the Maintenance workers. This is vital information!! There was also the Welcome Letter from each Principal along with all of the District information, the yearly calendar for sports, and the procedures for dealing with problems, where to go for lunch cards, how to sign up for an Activities' Pass, etc.
Yep, I am back in America, folks!! This is surreal to me!! How nice to have so much attention focused on the schools and giving information to the public. How unusual to be upfront and open about everything rather than hiding what is going on and who is where.
As a Special Education teacher, it was really nice to see all of the Policies and Procedures printed along with Due Process rights. Everyone is happy to be heading back to work, which is also unusual for me. There is always the usual gripe - why can't summer be longer AND we get paid during the summer, but most everyone seems genuinely happy to be returning.
Well, except me.....my summer "vacation" was non-existent. I'm still exhausted and looking forward to some really great rest NEXT summer!
