Lunch with Taylor

I was able to have lunch with Taylor on Friday at her school.  I made the required purchase of her fast food of choice (which is so incredibly better than school food), and I was in the designated waiting area 10 minutes ahead of the time.  Sadly, I was the only parent there for the longest time.

The school (I'm sure I've talked about this) hosts "family events" throughout the month.  Read with Your Child, Game Day with Your Child, etc.  Ken and I have noticed that there are always a ton of parents when it involves the younger children, but there are rarely parents for the older children.  I am sure a lot of them beg their parents not to show up due to embarrassment reasons, but when I'm the only parent in the room, I have a lot of children flock to me and wish their parent were there.

Luckily, a handful of parents showed up late which was great for the other kids, but there still wasn't enough for the amount of children.

As I walked through the front door of the cafeteria, Taylor was sitting at the first table, facing me and anxiously scanning the parents in front of me searching for me.  When she saw me, she lit up with a smile, and then started talking to her friends.

I had already eaten in the truck (I never remember to eat if Ken isn't around), so I was able to sit with her and chat.  She kept commenting on how quiet her friends were, and the other kids whose parents did not show were walking around, holding hands, being obnoxious and I was disturbed by the amount of kissing and foul language that was going on.

Thankfully, Taylor is still not embarrassed by me on a typical day.  I have my moments when she can't believe the things I say, but she doesn't mind being seen with me or when people comment that she's my clone.

I think it's great the school hosts these events, but I find it horrible that they need to because parents don't typically spend time with their children.  The girls all tell me (and the other kids have talked about it) about how we have movie night and game night and take vacations together.
