In preparation for my birthday, I wanted to go to Disneyland. The girls were still in school, so my buddy, Martin, volunteered to take me. He had worked for Disney, so he wanted to show me the things that most people don't even know existed.
We started by seeing the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. I hadn't seen this exhibit in a very long time, and Martin loved when I gasped with awe at the fact that Mr. Lincoln stood up! I didn't expect him to! I believed that the Lincoln figure would continue to talk and move his head, and I was astounded that he could tap his finger, but when he stood up, I was awestruck. Martin said that he loved that reaction from me and he couldn't wait to show me more.
We went on the Mark Twain steamboat while we looked through the schedule so Martin could figure out what I had seen and what I needed to see. What a view on a work day morning!
As we walked by the Tiki Room, Martin asked if I had ever been there. I told him that I hadn't because I thought it was a restaurant. Well, he showed me that it wasn't a restaurant, but he explained that that was the intent. I loved the little show and can't wait to bring the girls back here!
We enjoyed the Pirate's Lair which used to be Tom Sawyer's Island and then Splash Mountain. I loved that Martin wringed the water out of his socks at the end!!
Martin tried to get me to ride with the conductor on the Disneyland Train, but they had a few requests already, so I wasn't able to do that. It's completely awesome that you can ask though!! I also hadn't been to the Train Depot before during the day - the train was something we did in order to get back to the main gate when we were completely wiped out. The view is really nice!
We went over to California Adventure and had some fun. He took me to see the Muppets in 3D and the Aladdin show. I kept telling him that I had no idea this stuff was here, and Martin just kept telling me all of the fun stories from when he worked there and what else was available. The show for A Bug's Life was completely creepy which means I really can't wait to show the girls. At one point, I almost ended up in Martin's lap from being creeped out, and he got a really good laugh about it.
We tried to get on the new Ariel ride, but the line was long, and he didn't know anyone on it. We went onto Monsters, Inc., which was the ride that he opened when he worked at Disney, and it was fun to see things that I normally wouldn't have seen or known about without knowing someone who worked for them.
He also showed me through the nature Trail at the California Adventure. He worked there as well, so I got the information on that as well. I managed to see the bears, and I was able to get a picture with Kenai.
We headed back to Disneyland, and then we took a few minutes to rest while we waited for the Flag Retreat Ceremony. I knew that the Park flew flags, but I had no idea that there was a ceremony every day to take the flags down, AND that one of the men who work this ceremony ONLY comes in for that event, as well as the fact that there are Veterans who come to the park for this ceremony. A couple of the veterans that were there were very serious about this ceremony to the point that they moved a group of kids who were taking pictures in front of the flowers. I tried not to get upset by their fervor, but I could understand why this was important to them.
It was really cool to see this ceremony. Martin hopes that I'll bring Ken back to see this soon. From there, we grabbed an ice cream and somehow I finished that mammoth thing. Martin had also taken me to lunch at the Plaza, which I had never eaten in and really enjoyed.
I made Martin go on Pirates of the Caribbean and Thunder Mountain with me just because I enjoy them. While we walked to Thunder Mountain from Pirates, we got to see more than we bargained for.
We stopped to eat on the way home, and then made our way back up the hill. I was exhausted, but I had had a great day! What a way to start off the week!
