Fort MacArthur

One of the many things that I love about Ken is his retired Marine Corps status.  It allows us to travel all over the place at a very low cost.  We spend a week at the beach on Camp Pendleton every summer, and there are bases all over the world where we can stay using the Temporary Lodging Facility or other housing such as the beach cottages and cabins in Big Bear.

So, last month, Ken and I dropped the girls to their dad and then off we went.

Ken was looking around online, and he found Fort MacArthur.  He also read that if the General's Cottage (where General MacArthur stayed) hasn't been reserved by 4 pm, then anyone can ask for it. We called on Saturday, and we were able to get reservations.  We threw things in our overnight bags and off we went.

What we found was that we didn't actually have the General's Cottage, but we had Distinguished Visitor lodging.  This place was UNBELIEVABLE!  Not only was it larger than my first apartment, but it was nicer!!  I also couldn't get over the difference between the Air Force and the Marine Corps:  the silverware matched, the dishes all matched, the furniture was solid wood and luxurious, etc.  I could keep going, but suffice it to say:  The Air Force is a bunch of pampered people!

Ken and I drove into Redondo Beach for supper at The Cheesecake Factory.  We were too full to eat the cheesecake, so I made sure to get a slice to go.  It turned out to be a great breakfast in the morning.

As we headed back home, we were able to meet up for brunch with a friend of Ken's, Matt Lambert.  We had a great time visiting and enjoying the water at Belmont Shores.

All in all, this was a great little overnight trip.  Ken and I were able to enjoy the quiet of only being with each other while still enjoying that we didn't spend forever driving somewhere.
