I am a Phenomenon

I am still reeling from my last physical therapy appointment.  Sadly, I had worked so hard NOT to panic that I failed to take a picture of this event, but it is safe to say that the PT ladies called me a phenomenon during the event.

Well, they kept throwing around the term Raynaud's phenomenon, but they were talking about me.

Seriously, everyone was a bit panicked. They had used the electric stem on my wrist, hand and arm with an ice wrap to help stimulate the nerves and work on some healing. I had had this treatment before, and while the hand was tingly and uncomfortable, it seemed to be working.  On Friday, however, that was not the case.

My thumb and forefinger were more tingly than the last time, but I thought that was because they had increased the current. It turns out, nope. I was having a problem and didn't realize it.  When the PT worker, Melinda, pulled off the ice wrap, her eyes got huge, and then Laura looked and I could see concern all over her face as well.  I was none to pleased, but the thumb, forefinger and that side of my hand were an orangeish-red and the  entire rest of my hand was bluish-purple.  Oh holy hell!!!

Laura went and got the lady in charge and they all started throwing around the term Raynaud's. Needless to say, I was cracking jokes about my hand trying to mask the sheer terror I felt at seeing myself that way.  I was instructed to let my arm fall to my side and make  a fist and then release it.  After about 10 minutes, my hand was back to it's original color and everyone relaxed.

It wasn't until after I calmed down that I realized that I should have taken a picture of my hand!! Oh jeez!! Of all the times to forget to use my camera - it was really cool to see the colors on my hand and fingers - it was just really scary that it was MY hand.  Oh well.  I guess if I'm ordered back to PT and it happens again, I'll definitely get a picture of it.
